- ἱμάς
- ἱμάς, άντος, ὁ (Hom. et al.; ins, pap, LXX; Jos., Ant. 12, 192–94; Just., D. 131, 6) leather strap or thong, on sandals (X., An. 4, 5, 14; Menand., Fgm. 97, 3 Kö. [no. 109, 2 Kock]; Plut., Mor. 665b; Is 5:27) Mk 1:7; Lk 3:16; J 1:27. The interpr. of ὡς προέτειναν αὐτὸν τ. ἱμᾶσιν Ac 22:25 is in doubt. It can be instrumental dat., with the thongs, used for tying him to the post, but is better taken as a dat. of purpose for the thongs, in which case οἱ ἱμάντες=whips (Posidonius: 87 Fgm. 5 Jac.; POxy 1186, 2 τὴν διὰ τῶν ἱμάντων αἰκείαν.—Antiphanes 74, 8, Demosth. 19, 197 and Artem. 1, 70 use the sing. in this way).—DELG.
